Having a baby is a joyous occasion and one to be celebrated after 9 long months of pregnancy. However, there are many responsibilities that come along with having a child, and these can leave us feeling drained and make it difficult to lose the extra weight we gained while pregnant. Some of the weight goes away on its own, but there are many things that can be done to accelerate the weight loss process and get us back to looking and feeling like our formerly fit selves. Here are 4 tips to help you lose that extra weight you gained while bearing a child.

Eat Plenty of Vegetables

Vegetables are filling and satisfying but low in calories, meaning that you can easily feel full without overeating. It is especially helpful to eat veggies earlier in the day to help you set the tone for healthier choices throughout the rest of the day. Whether you throw some vegetables in an egg scramble or simply eat them raw or with some sort of dip, you’ll feel great and be well on your way to eating at a caloric deficit. This is one of the most important steps towards losing that baby weight. Pack a bag of baby carrots or broccoli, and next time you get that urge to buy a bag of potato chips from the vending machine, remember that you have a tastier, healthier option with you instead.

Go for Frequent Walks

Walking regularly is a great way to improve your health and shed pounds. Your baby will also benefit from exploring the fantastic new world and taking in new faces and scenery. Walking can be a great way to relieve stress, so if you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed, take your child out for a walk in nature and you’ll feel naturally calmed. To burn even more calories, carry your baby rather than putting him or her in a stroller.

Lift Weights

Weight training is one of the most effective and efficient ways to gain muscle and burn fat. If you have weights at home, it is easy to put together a simple routine to help you get back to your original weight. Don’t start too heavy, however. Focus on lightweight exercises at first and slowly work your way up to reduce the chance of injury. After all, you have a baby to take care of and torn muscle won’t help you with that!

Get Enough Sleep

Lack of sleep can be a major factor in weight gain due to the negative effects it has on your metabolism. When you get enough sleep, you have more energy and are even more likely to avoid junk food and unnecessary snacking. You may think asking a new mother to get more sleep seems like a joke – even cruel – because of the sleep schedule of the new baby. However, if you take naps when the baby naps and stick to a strict sleeping schedule, you’ll be getting enough sleep and losing weight in no time!
